SCHENECTADY, N.Y.
Nov. 14, 2002
At Comdex 2002, Authentidate, Inc., a subsidiary of Authentidate Holding Corp. (NASDAQ: ADAT), and Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) will demonstrate the United States Postal Service Electronic Postmark™ (USPS EPM™) The two companies will demonstrate the prototype functionality at Fall COMDEX 2002 in the Microsoft booth in Las Vegas next week.
Authentidate is the provider of the USPS EPM, which provides content authentication services to prove the integrity of electronic data through the use of date and time-stamping technology, digital signatures and hash codes. The USPS EPM is a web-based service made available as a software developer’s toolkit (SDK) enabling developers to easily incorporate non-repudiation services within any application. This electronic proof, postmarked by the USPS, offers the evidence necessary to deter and detect fraudulent tampering of electronic data so that, if necessary, a document with an EPM can be presented in a court of law.
The USPS EPM helps facilitate the goals of the recent E-SIGN legislation of June 2000, which was created in part to eliminate legal barriers to using electronic technology for online business transactions. Compliant with the performance-based guidelines required under ESIGN, USPS EPM enables businesses to take advantage of online contracts and commerce by offering a federally backed service for electronic transactions.
This functionality for Microsoft Office XP was co-developed by Authentidate and Microsoft and will be available as an extension for OfficeXP users early next year. "Working with Authentidate, we are happy to provide this innovative service for Microsoft Office XP users," said Steven Sinofsky, SVP of Microsoft Office. "By giving Microsoft Office users the ability to easily digitally sign Microsoft Word documents, this new service will enable new use scenarios for the Microsoft Office product family."
Microsoft will also take advantage of the USPS EPM technology internally, allowing employees to become early adopters of the new service.
"The Postal Service believes the Electronic Postmark offers significant value to online correspondence," said Nicholas Barranca, vice president, Product Development, U.S. Postal Service. "We are pleased that Microsoft will be including EPM technology into Office XP software and we are optimistic that our strategic alliance with Authentidate will continue to be mutually beneficial."
"While simultaneously bringing recent E-SIGN legislation to life, the USPS EPM service is important for companies to reap the benefits of doing business electronically," said Richard Reichgut, VP of Marketing, Authentidate, Inc. "Making this service available through Microsoft Office, the most popular productivity tool in the world, will bring the benefits of the USPS EPM to the widest possible audience. Authentidate is thrilled to work with Microsoft to offer its customers an unparalleled level of digital security in an easy and cost-effective manner."
Authentidate and Microsoft will be demonstrating the USPS EPM functionality for Office XP at COMDEX 2002 in Las Vegas. Representatives from Authentidate and Microsoft will be available to discuss the service November 17-20 in the Microsoft Booth (number 5058-118). If you wish to see a demo of this new technology, please contact Richard Reichgut at 212-329-1115.
